Cuddles and caresses are essential for long-term satisfaction in sexual relationships, but surprisingly, contrary to stereotypes, are more important for men than for women.
This is the conclusion reached by a study carried out by the Kinsey Institute at the University of Indiana and published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, the first of its kind to examine the parameters of sexual satisfaction in middle-aged couples in a long-term relationship. Contrary to researcher expectations, the study also found that most men consider the bigger picture saying they are happy and satisfied with their sexual relationship overall, whilst women focused on the more sexual side of their relationship in particular with regards to sexual satisfaction. There were over 1000 couples at the centre of the survey from the United States, Brazil, Germany, Japan and Spain, all had been together for an average of 25 years. Women, on the other hand, sexual satisfaction increased with the duration of a relationship. In fact, women who had been with a partner for less than 15 years consistently registered lower sexual satisfaction compared to those who had had the same partner for longer.
Overall the happiest couples were those from Japan and from Brazil and the least satisfied were those from the USA and from Europe.
